From lush rainforest and idyllic beaches to tree-to-bar chocolate experiences, discover 10 things to do in Saint Lucia
If you’re considering a tropical holiday, here are some of our favourite things to do in Saint Lucia…
Nestled within the Eastern islands of the sun-drenched Caribbean, Saint Lucia is a country with a rich history, culture, and biodiversity. Dazzling beaches, soothing sulphur springs, and of course, the magnificent Piton Mountains give Saint Lucia an undeniable charm.
This tropical haven holds a special place in our hearts at Hotel Chocolat. It’s the home of our Rabot Estate, as well as where we learnt to grow our own cacao. Its warm, tropical weather and gorgeous rainforest are perfect for cacao growing. And it’s both the climate and people of Saint Lucia that come together to create that sense of ‘terroir’ you can taste in our Rabot Estate chocolate.
But as you can probably guess, the climate doesn’t just make Saint Lucia great for cacao growing. There’s a reason the Caribbean is such a popular holiday destination, and there are plenty of things to do in Saint Lucia.
When is the best time to visit Saint Lucia?
As a tropical country, Saint Lucia enjoys its most stable weather in the dry season between December and May, when the temperature settles. May to June, in particular, is perfect if you want to avoid the crowds and make the most of the last of the dry season. The official hurricane season is July to November, with a hot and humid summer and autumn. But that doesn’t mean you can’t visit then. In fact, the chocolate lovers out there should pay attention, because August is Saint Lucia’s Chocolate Heritage Month!
Before you book any holidays in Saint Lucia, make sure to keep up to date with COVID-19 guidance. As of writing, you’ll need proof of vaccination (if vaccinated) or proof of a negative PCR test (if unvaccinated) to enter the country for the safety of both tourists and locals. See here for more information.
Things to do in Saint Lucia
With that said, here are some of our favourite things to do in Saint Lucia.
1. Climb Gros Piton
The two Piton mountains are an iconic part of Saint Lucia’s landscape. If you’re one of those adventurous folk who sees a mountain and has to climb it, the Gros Piton hike should be the first thing on your itinerary. Challenge your body, experience the stunning views from the summit, and feel that unbeatable sense of accomplishment when you reach the top.
Standing 2,619 feet above sea level, Gros Piton is taller than Petit Piton but surprisingly easier to climb. It’s far safer, too — Petit Piton involves a steep, dangerous climb.
2. Join the Gros Islet street party
Every Friday night, the streets of Gros Islet light up in the island’s loudest and brightest “jump up”. You’ll find sizzling street food, booming music, and people dancing in the street. This wild street party has taken place weekly for more than 50 years. Recently, however, a hiatus has taken place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news is, there are plans for the party to return after a two-year absence. We’re sure it’ll be back with a bang!
3. Explore the Pigeon Island National Park
For those who love to step back through time, Pigeon Island is a must-visit in Saint Lucia. Witness a piece of history and experience the beauty of 44 acres of lush greenery at Pigeon Island National Park. It’s home to the picturesque ruins of a late 18th-century fort that mark a key place in a battle between the French and British Empires in the 1780s.
The history of Saint Lucia dates back to pre-Columbian times, and it’s a combination of its Caribbean heritage and colonial history that gives it the varied and vibrant culture, cuisine, and language that it boasts today.
4. Experience the rainforest’s natural beauty
Rainforests are perhaps the most stunning and diverse habitat on the planet, and the lush forest of Saint Lucia is no different. You can see the forest from above with a trip on an aerial tram, or trek through the undergrowth to experience the unique flora up close.
5. Unwind in the Sulphur Springs
Located in an inactive volcano, Saint Lucia’s Sulphur Springs are a must-visit
Take a dip in the hot spring to wash the aches and pains away, then soothe your skin in the famous mud baths — said to have detoxifying properties. The experience ends with a stunning waterfall gushing into the pool below. Catch it on a day when the water’s force is weak and you can even enjoy an invigorating massage under the cascading water.
6. Relax on the beach
This is it, the recommendation you’ve all been waiting for. There’s no shortage of gorgeous beaches in Saint Lucia, from the sugar-white sands of Anse des Pitons to the vibrant coral reef at Anse Chastanet. Whether you’re looking for an exciting day out filled with snorkelling, swimming, and watersports, or just want to chill out and soak up the sun, these beaches have it all.
7. Shop at the Castries Market and Vendor’s Arcade
Earning a spot in National Geographic’s “Top 10 Food Markets”, the Castries Market has all the vibrant sights, sounds, and smells you’d expect of the largest open-air market in the country — especially on a Saturday morning when it’s at its busiest. Catering to the needs of locals and tourists alike, the bustling market is alive with tropical fruits, vegetables, and spices in abundance. You’ll also find a variety of exquisite handmade crafts.
8. Dive into the clear waters of Saint Lucia
The clear tropical waters and abundant marine life of the Caribbean make Saint Lucia the perfect place for diving. And with over 22 world-class diving spots in the country, we can’t just recommend one diving spot — that would be impossible! From the secluded Smugglers Cove to the aptly-titled Fairyland, dive sites full of vibrant coral and marine life are aplenty. If you’ve never been diving before, now’s your chance to experience the wonders that the waters of Saint Lucia have to offer.
9. Experience nightlife at Rodney Bay Village
The heart of Saint Lucia’s nightlife is located in Rodney Bay Village, where bars, restaurants, and nightclubs line the marina and illuminate the night. Great for a raucous night out or just a few drinks. You won’t want to miss Rodney Bay if you like your holidays a little on the wild side.
10. Project Chocolat
Saint Lucia and chocolate are closely intertwined, as the island has boasted a strong cacao-growing tradition since the 1700s.
At Hotel Chocolat, we’re proud to be a part of that tradition in Saint Lucia today, and there’s no better way to experience that than at our Project Chocolat experience. Witness the story of chocolate from tree to bar at Project Chocolat, our definitive chocolate experience in the heart of our Rabot Estate in Saint Lucia.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, the idyllic Rabot Hotel has it all, from breathtaking views of the Pitons to a relaxing spa.
