Mother’s Day ideas: things to do, places to go
8 Feb 2022
No one works harder than Mum. So why not treat her to the Mother’s Day she deserves: one built around her?
Most mums need a break. Every week is guaranteed to be busy, whether it’s juggling work and packing lunchboxes, stuffing the car with duvets destined for university towns or stepping in to pick up the grandchildren. So when Mother’s Day rolls around this year, why not treat the special lady in your life to a day planned around the things she loves best – whether that’s putting her feet up or trying something new. Here are some Mother’s Day activity ideas to surprise and delight.
Mother’s Day ideas for the adventurer
Is your mum, step-mum or guardian an active person? If she loves getting out and about, consider taking her on a little adventure.
Go for a refreshing walk
Why not get some one-on-one time with Mum and find a beautiful spot for a walk or a hike? Of course, you could always bring the whole family along, too. If the weather is nice, pack a picnic and find a lovely viewpoint to enjoy as you tuck into lunch.
Organise a bike ride
Is there a nice cycle path nearby? Get your sturdy shoes on, check the bike tyre pressure and set off for a cycle in the sunshine!
Do a yoga class together
If the weather isn’t quite up to scratch for an outdoor adventure, you could always stay inside and go to a yoga class together. It’s a nice way to calm and centre yourselves while offering the chance to bond.
Pop to a favourite cafe afterwards for a cup of coffee and a cake! Alternatively, you could whip up a delicious hot chocolate at home.
Cosy at-home activities
Mother’s Day is all about spending quality time with Mum, Grandma, or the maternal figure in your life. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the day in the comfort of your home. Here are a few chilled Mother’s Day ideas.
Set up a movie night
Of course, what she might want most of all is a night on the sofa with you. Every mum is rushed off her feet sometimes, so how about flat-out relaxing? Make Mother’s Day a movie night and invite her to a ‘not-quite-premiere-night’ screening on your TV.
If you don’t already know, find out what her all-time favourite film is. From Dirty Dancing to Die Hard, get it lined up and ready to go. Rustle up some kernels in a pan and pop up some homemade popcorn with toppings of her choice. Does she like her seasoning savoury and salty or on the sweeter side?
How about some luxurious nibbles and drinks to make it all the more memorable? Get a selection of her favourite chocolates or go all out and shake up some delectable cocktails. Whether she’s a gin fan, enjoys a nip of vodka or prefers a bottle of boutique bubbly, peruse our collection of boozy treats and find a drink she’ll adore.
What’s more, our tipples have a unique cacao twist, making them excellent additions to creative cocktail creations. From a Velvetised White Russian to a fruity Tropical Daisy Cocktail, there’s no end to the drinks you can come up with. Explore our cacao recipes for more inspiration.
Cook her favourite meal
What better way to show love for your mum than cooking up her favourite meal? Dig out those old recipes, the dog-eared ones in a folder somewhere that haven’t seen the light of day in years. It will make her day if you make them, especially if it’s the sort of thing she never has time for herself. Familiar smells from the oven will bring back memories, which you can share over lunch or dinner.
If she’d like something new and surprising, have a flick through our cookbook, A New Way of Cooking with Chocolate, for over 100 recipes enhanced with cacao.
Foodie treats
Aside from cooking a meal at home, there are plenty of other culinary delights you can treat Mum to. Here are some more delicious Mother’s Day ideas for the foodie.
Time for Mother’s Day afternoon tea
Get ready to start cutting the edges off those cucumber sandwiches. Why not dress the table and invite Mum to a quaint afternoon tea? Whether you keep it simple with sarnies and muffins or go all out with a three-tiered cake affair, the fact you’ve gone to the effort of preparing it yourself will make it all the more cherished.
If she has a particular appreciation for chocolate, give your afternoon tea a fun Alice in Wonderland twist with a chocolate-inspired Mad Hatter’s tea party.
Alternatively, for a bit of Mother’s Day escapism, why not be waited on? Beyond traditional stacked sandwiches, enjoy afternoon tea with a unique savoury cocoa twist at our London restaurant Rabot 1745.
Chocolate tasting extravaganza
Another great Mother’s Day idea for cacao fans is to host a chocolate tasting evening. Simply line up a selection of different truffles, pralines, tipples, and filled chocolates. Get two of each kind and, together, you can go through each chocolate one by one, exploring its aroma, texture and taste. Does it melt in the mouth? Is there an element of crunch or a zesty citrus tang? Make the most of every mouthful.
Chocolate making experience
Want to take your Mother’s Day chocolate game to the next level? Get ready to roll up your sleeves and invite Mum to a Bean-to-Bar Experience. Together, you can discover the art of chocolate-making, try an array of delicious confectionery, and take home your very own masterpiece.
What about Mother’s Day gifts?
Mum’s sure to appreciate the effort you’ve put into planning a special day for her. Chances are she won’t be expecting a physical gift, too! But if you fancy getting her an extra little treat as a token of your affection, you can’t beat a vibrant flower bouquet or an elegant box of chocolates.
